'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' Moves Forward With 'National Treasure' Writers

The film adaptation of Sony’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is moving ahead with two new writers at the helm. Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, who co-wrote both National Treasure movies, have been tapped to rewrite the film which follows a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake on an epic adventure to find the lost treasure of El Dorado. Neil Burger was the latest director to be attached but, with Thursday’s news that he’s moved on to another project, he’s now off the video game adventure film. Read more after the jump.

Variety broke the news of the new scribes, who seem like a very obvious a choice for the studio. Having turned two National Treasure movies into successful, entertaining crowd-pleasers, it’s likely they’ll be able to crack the code for Uncharted, which has been stuck in development hell for years. Once a new script is completed, Sony will take it out to directors.

Sony knows, much like National Treasure, Uncharted is a potentially huge franchise and the fact that they haven’t rushed ahead with it is certainly a good sign. The hiring of the Wibberley’s though, who also created the show Common Law, co-wrote G-Force and are credited on Bad Boys II, feels like a layup. Uncharted has edge, action, and a grittiness that’s not in any of those properties. It’s more about Nathan Drake, the character, than the setting around him. Hopefully, they know that and at least give a new director a place to start, helping this movie to finally get made.
