'Ginger & Rosa' Trailer: Blooming Before the Bomb Drops Sep 7th 2012, 23:34 Writer/director Sally Potter takes her time, with only six features released after her 1983 debut, The Gold Diggers. Her 1992 movie Orlando helped push Tilda Swinton from the Derek Jarman coterie into the larger indie movie world, but Potter’s own films since have sat pretty firmly on the fringes of art house territory. Will Ginger & Rosa (once called Bomb) be at all different? It does features prominent roles for recognizable actors like Christina Hendricks, Oliver Platt, Annette Bening, and a rapidly maturing Elle Fanning, who co-stars along with newcomer Alice Englert. And it has the sort of subject matter that audiences take to well: a girl’s coming of age as social mores evolve and political tensions rise. If this footage looks familiar at all you might be a fan of Andrea Arnold’s films — Ryan shot Red Road, Fish Tank, and Wuthering Heights, for which we just featured a trailer earlier today. I’ll see as much of his work as the world can give me. In London, 1962,  two teenage girls, Ginger and Rosa (Elle Fanning and Alice Englert), are inseparable. They skip school, discuss religion, politics and hairstyles, and dream of lives bigger than their mothers’ frustrated domesticity. But, as the Cold War meets the sexual revolution, and the threat of nuclear holocaust escalates, the lifelong friendship of the two girls is shattered – by the clash of desire and the determination to survive. Sally Potter (Rage, Yes) directs the film which also stars Christina Hendricks, Oliver Platt, Timothy Spall, Jodhi May and Annette Bening. The film hits the UK in October, but has no US release date.
