Joss Whedon Explains How Team-Building in 'The Avengers' Was Only the Beginning, Discusses Overseeing Marvel Movie Universe
Sep 11th 2012, 17:00

Because he’s up in Toronto promoting his small Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon is fielding questions about further plans for The Avengers and the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yesterday he gave a ringing endorsement to presumed Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, and now he has made some comments about where Marvel’s movies will go next and how he’ll help them get there.

Speaking to Vancouver.24, Whedon explained that his Marvel deal allows him to make other films like Much Ado About Nothing as he preps the next big stage of Marvel’s cinema. Part of Whedon’s job with the next stage of the MCU is acting as a sort of godfather, making sure that all the stories work together. He explains,

Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say” – here, Whedon affects a pompous British accent – “‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.”

And he explains that The Avengers — specifically the team-building part of that story — is just the beginning of what he wants to accomplish with the world’s biggest hero team.

The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.
